This project was inspired by my experiences living as a black woman with Afro hair in a foreign country. It is not uncommon for black women and men to be stereotyped for wearing certain hairstyles, I for instance was told that I would not get a job if my hair did not look a certain way. The words hurt me but acted as a form of inspiration to me.

This feeling of hurt led me to create this body of work which documents the art of Afro hair, in its many shapes and forms. It recognizes that hair is still used today as a means of labeling black people and aims to pay homage to the art of dressing hair in my home country of Nigeria. The body of work comprises a host of photographs taken across the city of Lagos. Some photographs document street style whilst others are close to home and depict ‘hairdressing’ in my own home.
