Popo Aguda delves into the existing connection between Nigeria and Brazil, by way of the slave trade during the colonial era. Specifically, the project documents the stories of Afro-Brazilian Descendants as well as Brazilian Architecture in Lagos, Nigeria. The structures were built by the slaves who returned from Brazil who were coined as Agudas, but are unfortunately being knocked down and replaced with ‘glitzy new buildings.’ The project aims to bring more light to the ways in which Afro-Brazilian descendants have sought to preserve elements of Afro-Brazilian culture passed down to them over generations, in Lagos.
